Thursday: Strange Sounds in the Night
That night, as they set up camp under the stars, the forest around them came alive with strange sounds. Twigs snapped, and low rustles echoed in the darkness.
Miracle growled softly, his ears pricked. Sleepy Z, unusually alert, stood with his back arched, staring into the shadows.
“Do you hear that?” Jas whispered, clutching their blanket tightly.
Roman nodded, gripping a makeshift spear he’d fashioned from a sturdy branch. “Stay close to the fire,” he said. “Whatever it is, we don’t want to attract it.”
Ivy Mae sat near the small fire they’d built, flipping through the survival notebook. Her fingers trembled as she found a section labeled “Emergency Night Signals.”
“There’s a trick here,” she said. “We can use light and sound to scare off predators. Let me try something.”
She grabbed a flashlight and banged two metal pots together. The noise echoed loudly, and whatever was lurking in the woods seemed to retreat.
“Nice work,” Roman said, exhaling in relief.
But none of them slept soundly that night.
