The Run to Safety

 Tuesday: The Run to Safety

The group sprinted uphill, the heat from the geyser singeing their backs. Hot mud splattered around them, and sharp shards of crystal rained down, glittering in the sunlight like broken glass.

Jas’s breath came in ragged gasps, their energy quickly fading. “I… I can’t…” they panted, collapsing to their knees.

“You have to keep going!” Roman urged, hauling Jas to his feet.

Miracle circled them, barking encouragement, while Ivy Mae pointed to a ridge in the distance. “There! If we can reach that hilltop, we’ll be safe!”

The group pushed forward, their muscles aching and lungs burning. Behind them, the volcano’s geyser began to morph, the mud hardening and shaping into something entirely unnatural.
