At Peace

 Tuesday:

As the days pass, the group bonds. Roman takes to the grandfather, who shares old stories of the land. Ivy Mae helps Maria and the great-aunt forage and prepare food. Jas becomes inseparable from Sam, teaching him to recognize different birds by their calls.

One evening, the family gathers around the fire. The great-aunt begins singing an old song, her voice carrying a haunting melody. The blind boy taps a rhythm on a nearby log, and soon everyone is humming along.

“I haven’t felt this at peace in a long time,” Ivy Mae whispers to Roman.

“Neither have I,” Roman replies.
